Case Studies

Challenge
Drilling thru formations with abnormally high pressure and narrow mud windows. High tendency for total losses, stuck pipe incidents and well control events frequently resulted in loosing the hole.
Solution
Optimized drilling fluid system. Enhanced wellbore pressure-bearing capacity during drilling. Implemented precise control over the mud density. Redefined well control procedures for lost circulation and influx management.
Impact
Minimized frequency of incidents and reduced total non-productive time by 70% with zero reoccurrence of wellbore abandonment due to stuck pipe incidents as experienced previously.
Challenge
Unconventional reservoirs - shale gas. While drilling horizontal section observed low ROP due to hard formation resulted in extensive well duration and well costs exceeding the budget.
Solution
Worked closely with bit manufacturers to optimize drill bits selection and design tailor-made drill bits suitable for current conditions based on the actual performance.
Impact
The average number of bits required per well decreased from 20 to 8, and the average well time reduced from 320+ days to 190..200 days.
Challenge
The customer was unable to rotate 7" liner in most of the wells due to incorrect surface torque limitations resulted in poor cement quality. The customer's team was convinced the rotation was barely possible.
Solution
Revised torque and drag simulations and justified the capability to increase surface torque limitations while cementing without risks of exceeding the make-up torque of the liner connections.
Impact
After introducing a new approach, more then 90% of the liners were cemented with rotation. The cementing quality was significantly improved. That enabled the client to avoid financial losses of $ 4+ million in potential remedial operations.
Challenge
The customer followed outdated Basis of Design that was built without taking into account depletion of the productive formation and recent lessons learnt. Casings strings were overdesigned that significantly affected the cost of the wells.
Solution
Careful review of the most updated pore pressure and frac gradient, as well as historical information on the downhole incidents allowed to revisit the casing design by eliminating an extra casing string and revising weights and grades of other casings based on the actual data.
Impact
Reduction in well cost by approx. $ 500..700 k per well.
Challenge
Drilling through salt formation repeatedly resulted in severe brine influxes. Standard well control methods were ineffective due to a narrow mud window and risks of borehole collapse, stuck pipe, and downhole losses.
Solution
Implemented flow while drilling method combined with pre-planned well control and contingency measures, including RCD-equipped surface system and brine pits. Continued drilling while managing brine flow using sacrificial fluid and special BHA design.
Impact
Successfully drilled the section to TD with zero NPT, safely ran and cemented the casing, remained within AFE limits, and preserved over $ 1 million in contingency budget. The next wells were successfully drilled using the same method.
Challenge
Feasibility study for 26 wells drilling campaign. Pad drilling. Highly deviated S-shape wells. Anticipated extremely high torque and drag resulted in excessive technical requirements. Shortage of experience and high uncertainty. High risk of stuck pipes.
Solution
Revised the number and location of pads based on the well engineering simulations though optimizing the design of the wells taking into account rig selection requirements, available technologies and equipment, and surface facilities limitations.
Impact
Reduced rig specs requirements from 3000 hp to 2000 hp. Eliminated unnecessary expensive technologies. Reduced the duration of the entire project by 160 days. Total savings $ 46 million.
